Luxembourg is the third smallest country in Europe with fairy-tale like architecture and beautiful nature. It makes a perfect side trip for those who are travelling in the Benelux (Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg). You can reach the capital Luxembourg City quite easily by train from Paris or Brussels. I love taking trains, it’s the best way to see more of a country. The train from Brussels to Lux City is very scenic and you will see plenty of the beautiful Belgian countryside. The first thing I noticed was: Why does Luxembourg have the same flag as The Netherlands? They told me that they are identical, the only difference is the brightness of the colors in the flag (red & blue). It’s not difficult to get in touch with the locals, because they speak French, English and German.
Although I’m from The Netherlands I only got a chance to visit Luxembourg in 2016. You will always save the places which are close to home for last 😉

Here are the 3 best places to visit in Luxembourg City.
1. The Corniche
The majority of the sights in Lux City are located in the fairly small old town; a half day is more than enough to see them all. The beautiful Chemin de la Corniche (promenade) offers the best views over the Grund (lower part of the city).
You can walk the entire promenade towards the Bock Casemates where you will see rock galleries carved out by the Spaniards back in 1744.
I stayed at Luxembourg Youth Hostel which is below the Corniche. Their breakfast is pretty huge for a hostel! You can walk up the hill to the Corniche or take the elevator which is located near the Citadel.
2. Squares & Palace
The best place to go when you are hungry, is the main square. The Place d’Armes is packed with restaurants. Besides the restaurants, the square is also lined up with stunning buildings.
The palace ‘Palais Grand-Ducal’ is an architectural gem tucked away in the shopping centre of the old town.
The squares are nice, but the city lacks a bit of excitement; they haven’t invented nightlife in Luxembourg City yet.
3. Old Town Architecture
Aside of the highlights mentioned above there are more historical buildings which are worth visiting. Just take a stroll around the old town and you will find plenty of great architecture. The area with the courts and legal offices are good for a walk too (see top banner).
I only had 1 day in Luxembourg City, but that’s more than enough for this small city. I heard some great stories about the small town of Vianden, have you been?

Cool! Ik ga er over een weekje heen, kamperen in Duitsland en zeker trips naar Luxemburg.
Gaaf! Heel veel plezier alvast! Ik wil zeker nog eens terug om Vianden te bezoeken!
